You can't beat personal experience - it's the deciding factor for the majority of Britons when it comes to buying a used car.
Most drivers - 38 per cent - rely on their own knowledge of the vehicle when it comes to doing the deal, research by British Car Auctions (BCA) reveals.
"And if personal experience isn't pushing you towards one car or another, then it seems we talk to family and friends above all else," says BCA spokesman Tim Naylor.

"This makes a lot of sense, after all, these are the people more likely than not to be driven in your used car. In fact, with 28 per cent saying it influences them, the advice of our nearest and dearest is seen as more important than a test drive, which 22 per cent say influences them."

"Whichever way we use it, there is plenty of consumer advice, car forums and product recommendation sites on the web, which is currently the fourth most influential factor according to our research."

Naylor points out that 17 per cent of drivers say the internet influences their choice of used car "To put that in perspective, the figure was just ten per cent two years earlier," he says.
"But TV car shows have considerably less influence than they might hope.'' "Just six per cent in our poll said programmes such as Top Gear and Driven influence the choice of used car.
"But even that figure is higher than that quoted for car TV advertisements, with just five per cent saying these influenced choice."
Meanwhile, the luxury end of the used car market could soon see a rise in prices following one maker's move to improve the kit on a new model, reckon the valuation little black dresses little black dresses experts at Glass's Guide.
The decision by BMW to make leather trim and Bluetooth connectivity standard little black dresses on the new BMW 5-Series could signal a change in strategy for all premium brands, which, in turn, will translate into higher used-car values, says Richard Crosthwaite, prestige car editor at Glass's.
"The move by BMW to include these items of equipment as standard, with barely an increase in price over the outgoing model, is likely to prompt a similar move by rivals," says Crosthwaite.

"The additional luxuries offered on the new 5-Series will be of great benefit when reselling the car and it seems inevitable that BMW's competitors will follow suit."
Finally, second-hand car dealers who typically sell cars for between Pounds 7,000 and Pounds 8,000 have been badly hit by scrappage fall-out, says Used Car Expert magazine.
Editor Matt Tumbridge says: "Thanks to the Pounds 2,000 trade-in initiative, dealers are now really struggling to find replacement stock at sensible prices."

Tumbridge stresses that he has not yet seen a significant rise in prices across the board, but if the supply shortage continues, that will happen and the average motorist will be hit hard.
