A TOTAL of six victories over two days of competition ensured the Aviva Great Britain and Northern Ireland finished second in the European Team Championships in Bergen.

Great Britain had started day two in second place after a strong showing on Saturday, which included victories by Dwain Chambers, Mo Farah, Colin McCourt, David Greene and Martyn Rooney. Andy Turner claimed another victory yesterday as the team ended with 317 points, 62.5 behind Russia and 12.5 ahead of third-placed Germany.

Chambers' effort of 9.99seconds to win the 100m was especially notable as it was his best legal performance since he clocked an identical time at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton.

The Londoner clocked 9.87 in 2002 but that mark was expunged following his drug ban in 2003, from which he returned in 2006.

There were also second-place finishes for Phillips Idowu, Michael Rimmer, Bristol & West life member Jo Pavey, Hannah England and the men's 4x400m relay squad.

Idowu, who claimed the triple jump world title in Berlin last summer, could only manage second spot, behind Viktor Kuznyetsov.

Rimmer was beaten by former Olympic champion Yuriy Borzakovskiy in a championship record of 1:45.41, with the Briton 0.21 adrift despite attacking the Russian on the home straight.

England produced a well-judged run in the 1,500m, and although she tried her best to cut the gap on Anna Mishchenko in the final 60m, she fell short and had to be satisfied with second in 4:05.70.

Pavey also claimed 11 points for the GB team in the 5,000m.

The 36-year-old was overtaken by Sabrina Mockenhaupt and was unable to claw back the deficit, with the Replica watches German setting a championship record of 15:17.38, 0.49 ahead of Pavey.

The women's 4x400m squad claimed fourth, Emily Freeman and Leon Baptiste were both fifth in their respective 200m races, likewise Luke Gunn in the 3,000m steeplechase.

Jade Johnson was seventh in the long jump and there were eighth- place finishes for Mervyn Luckwell (javelin) and Angelita Broadbelt Blake (100m hurdles).
